Portfolio's Are Due Tomorrow!
In class today, we are still working on our portfolios. They are due at the latest at 3:40p.m. tomorrow which is June 19. For those who don't understand what exactly is to be expected, this is what Mr. Maksymchuk told us in class. The portfolio needs five samples of work, we choose three of the samples and Mr. Maksymchuck chooses the other two. Mr.Maksymchuk wants to see your best blog posts (you choose) and our measurement project in your portfolio, the rest you decide. Each sample of work that is in your portfolio needs a response sheet. These sheets are what is going to get you marks, On the one side you need to explain what you learned and how it will be useful and on the flip side you need to explain your mathematical skills you need. This final assignment is worth 10% of your overall grade. So work hard and try and get it done for tomorrow. Good luck.
June 18 Work Period
Today Mr. Max gave us another work period to finish up our portfolios, blog rubric or anything else we need to get done for class. Our portfolios and blog are due at 3:40 tomorrow. Both of these items are worth a big percentage of our final grade.

Scribe Post, May 9th
We never took any notes or learned anything new in class today. A random homework check was done on one of the 8 questions that were due and alot of people weren't done. The 8 questions had to be done in order to leave the room at the end of the block. People who finished are suppost to work ahead into chapter 4, 218-219 and do questions #1-5, Converters off the blog can be used to help in this assignment.

First Day After Spring Break
So how was everyone's spring break? Mine was pretty boring, just like a long weekend. The weekend of the week was pretty good though. Anyways, today we started learning about vehicle insurance. Right at this very moment there are 9 of us sitting here. We started new mental math sheets.
Vocab from today's lesson:
-Premium: the amount you pay for insurance for a specific amount of time.
-Rate Class VS. Rate Group
(where you live) (type of vehicle)
-TPL: third party liability: insurance provided to a third-party in the event that you cause personal injury or property damage.
-Deductible: money paid by the insured(you) to the company to activate an insurance policy; designed to PREVENT frivolous/frandulent claims.
-"Claims-Free": never made an insurance claim on your policy; you're considered a "good risk".

March 25/08

Today in class we started off with the regular mental math. It was our 20th time doing it so we had to find out our average and hand them in for marks. People who skipped todays class recieve a 0 for their mark. For the rest of the class we did accelerated math and Mr Max helped everyone with questions, if they had any of course.

We have a test on thursday the test is on data analysis!!!!!!!!!!!
Portfolio Value: 10% of your grade
Due: Friday June 6th
You need 5 items student choice on 3 items
The dumb joke of the day.
How many mathematicians does it take to screw in a light bulb?
If k mathematicians can change a light bulb and if one more simply watches them do it, then k+1 mathematicians will have changed the lightbulb. Therefore, by induction, for all n in the positive integers, n mathematicians can change a light bulb.

Blog for Mach 13
Today was a short block we worked on our circle and bar graph assignment i think for the most part it was fairly simple. We didn't learn anything new today it was mostly a work period. Also don't forget we have a test coming up soon so be prepared and good luck on it!!!

Portfolio
Today, Mr. Max asked us what our portfolio should be about. I personally don't know what a math portfolio is supposed to look like (ha ha), so I guess maybe our goals (long term and short term), our achievements (??), and that's really all I came up with. So if anyone else has any other ideas share them!!!

Blogs
Maybe I should keep this to myself, but if you want an honest opinion... I don't use the blog at all. I think it's pointless because no one really cares. That's just me though. I don't know how anyone else feels, but I probably won't ever use it other than on my day. (It's just an opinion).
When they miss their day, put those people that miss the class on to the next day and use the person that goes next for that day, and so on. It would work. Maybe not the best solution, but yeah. Again, it's only one person's opinion.

Solve This Problem?
So we've discussed in class this recent two-fold problem....Please respond if you care to:
1. How do we encourage students to take responsibility for their 'day' when they're scheduled to post/blog/scribe?
2. What do we do in the event that someone unavoidably misses the class where they're scheduled to be the scribe?

We had a test on friday. The test covered everything we did in class this year so far. The test was fairly easy if you studied but a couple of the questions were tricky.
since we didnt do anything in class today i am going to suggest a link to go to because it is a good learning site. It is all games and activities that are math related and could possibly help in the areas that you are stuck in.

Compound Interest

Today in class we learned about compound interest..
Compound Interest
is the concept of adding accumulated interest back to the principal, so that interest is earned on interest from that moment on. The act of declaring interest to be principal is called compounding (i.e. interest is compounded).
Compound Interest
is great when you are investing because the interest your investments earn is also earning interest. Compound interest is not so great when you borrow money because it costs more than simple interest. The longer your investment is compounding, the greater the amount of interest you earn. If you invest for a long term, it is in the last years of the term that you see the biggest impact of compounding. The earlier you start saving, the more time there is for an investment to grow. Interest is not always compounded annually. Some financial institututions add interest to the principal every six months. In that case, the interest is compounded semi-anually. There are also daily savings accounts, where interest is compounded on a daily basis.
Terms of compound interest
-Compounded annually
-Compounded daily
-Compounded semi-anually
The rule of 72
To quickly estimate the length of time it takes for an investment to double, use the rule of 72. All you need is the interest rate and the number 72. Divide 72 by the interest rate(as a number, not a percentage) to find the time in years. If the interest rate is 10%, divide 72 by 10 to find the time in years: 72/10=7.2 years. Note that 7.2 years is not 7 years and 2 months. It is 7 years plus 0.2 times 12 months. 7.2 years is therefore 7 years plus 2.4 months.
The 'Rule of 72' is a simplified way to determine how long an investment will take to double, given a fixed annual rate of interest. By dividing 72 by the annual rate of return, investors can get a rough estimate of how many years it will take for the initial investment to duplicate itself. For example, the rule of 72 states that $1 invested at 10% would take 7.2 years ((72/10) = 7.2) to turn into $2. In reality, a 10% investment will take 7.3 years to double ((1.10^7.3 = 2).When dealing with low rates of return, the Rule of 72 is fairly accurate. This chart compares the numbers given by the rule of 72 and the actual number of years it takes an investment to double.

Lilmurls- goal setting for this semester

As a grade 11 consumer math student i will set my goal and do my very best to achieve it. One of my goals is to get over 60% in the class. Another goal is to not miss any class. Ways that i can achieve this goal is to do all assignments and study for tests.
I got my picture from http://www.hockeycanada.ca/
Kendelle's Goal Setting

My GOAL for this grade 11 consumer math course is to complete every assignment on time and have NO outstanding assignments. I plan on RECEIVING a mark higher then 80%.
